VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES
Comments from volunteers working with Space
- Space is a wonderful project for training and encouraging people who are looking for a voluntary role. It is ideal for recently retired or unemployed people looking for something other than paid work. As a volunteer at the drop-in, I gain from the client perhaps more than I give. It is a very special service
- I have a joy inside and a feeling ‘part of’ when working as a volunteer
- As volunteer I hope I can help others towards a happier future. I come away from the drop-in sessions feeling fulfilled and grateful I got involved with Space
- I used to come to Space as a member, seeking support when I was going through a very dark and lonely time. Now life is a lot easier to cope with for me and I enjoy working as a volunteer giving something back and helping others see some light too
- I gain personally from contact with people at the drop-ins. There have been a number of times when I have been having a difficult time and the focus of volunteering at drop-ins has given me cause to keep going
- I think that the informal atmosphere of the Space drop-ins makes it easier to approach us without feeling inadequate for asking for help or labelling themselves with any particular condition. The care we offer, through befriending and active listening, is combined with companionship in a sincere and sensitively low-key way so as to minimise any feelings of condescension. Members are free to share problems knowing that they will be taken seriously and will not be judged or rejected. They are supported gently in making contact with others at times when they may find this difficult. People who are feeling fragile or isolated can be reassured that there is a place where they are included and respected. There is a spontaneous feeling of community within the group which I think aids healing and helps to overcome stigma associated with. say, loneliness or mental illness in a way which may be difficult or impossible for professionals or other services

- SPACE is the most wonderful charity for sending donations to .. I know because when I visited SPACE for the very first time in order to meet with the Project Co-ordinator and chat about their good work I found myself opening up to her with my own concerns .. this was because she (and her team of helpful volunteers) are so easy to converse with .. SPACE helps with an assortment of personal problems .. depressions .. and much more .. please .. if you have an hour free and need a kind word or two or just help with a problem then visit SPACE .. you will not regret it.
– Barbara Russel is an Aylesbury town councillor & former town mayor when Space was the council’s charity of the year.
Space would not be able to provide this service and help the numerous individuals it does if it did not receive the support from the donations its receives. If you are able to support Space by making a donation please either click here or to send your gift to the Space office. Thank you to all of those who support Space.
